Eric Evenson:
Homecoming weekend here at Maxwell Field will feature a much anticipated showdown between two-time defending NWC champion Whitworth and the 2008 edition of your Linfield Wildcats. The students have planned a “purple out” for today’s game. Expect to see a lot of purple shirts in the crowd today in what can be expected to be a sunny game throughout the afternoon. Whitworth nipped Linfield 10-6 and 17-13 the past two seasons. The Pirates have done so with solid defensive and the possibility of backup quarterbacks getting the start today you can expect to see much of the same.
Prior to the game Linfield honored past players in the “Walk of Honor.” The players honored spanned from the 40′s all the way to recently graduated Wildcats. These are many of the players who contributed to the current “streak” and established the tradition that is Linfield football.
There are two key stories to watch for today’s ball game. The first is the Linfied rush defense vs. Adam Anderson. Anderson comes into the game as the conference’s leading rusher, while the Wildcats boast the top rushing defense. The other story is the Linfield passing game. Last weekend the Wildcats played it pretty tight to the vest in the passing game with third-string quarterback Cole Bixenman getting his first career start. It will be interesting to see if the ‘Cats open up the play book with the idea that Whitworth will stack the box and look to stop the Linfield rushing game. In the possibility that it is Franklin that gives it a go today, we shouldn’t expect much of the option or too many rushes from the sophomore.
1st Quarter:
Linfield takes over at their own 32. Reggie Ford takes the first carry. Ford missed is seeing his first action of the season.
14:30 – Ford rushes for two yards on two carries to start the game.
13:20 – Ford is stopped a yard short on a third down draw play. The ‘Cats show early that they may not be willing to take many shots down the field through the air. The punt starts the Whitworth drive and the 25 yard line with 12:48 to go.
12:01 – Jesse Clark makes a 27 yard catch to the Linfield 47.
12:01 – The Pirates are called for a false start. They were set up for a direct snap to Adam Anderson.
11:09 – Another play-action this time caught by Dale Entel to the Linfield 21. Whitworth is showing early that they are willing to take some shots down field. The ‘Cats are geared up for Anderson on first-downs.
10:06 – Wide reciever pass! Mike Peck throws it out to the far side of the field to Steve Stockton who then throws a jump-ball to Justin Monahan down to the Linfield one. The very next play Adam Anderson punches it in from a yard out.
9:44 – Whitworth 7 Linfield 0
Correction: Cole Franklin is in the game for the Wildcats.
8:52 Reggie Ford down to the Whitworth 47 and a first down
8:28 – The Wildcats that their first shot down field to John Torsey but the pass is broken up seeing up a second and ten. The ‘Cats have been content to stay on the ground on first down over the past two weeks but today we may get to see Franklin throw the ball a bit more.
7:36 – Masters out in the flat on a third and six for a first down all the way down to the Whitworth 32.
7:07 – A Reggie Ford run down to the 16 is brought by all the way to the Pirate 39 because of a holding penelty.
6:46 – Big time catch by Ryan Henderson all the way down to the Linfield 16.
6:10- Franklin hits Torsey for a first down to the Pirate 2 yard line.
4:48 – BOOM! Ford from a yard out. Linfield 7 Whitworth 7.
4:41 – Whitworth takes over at its own 34. Anderson for a gain of 3. Anderson really has not been able to get going today he has only three yards rushing on the day.
3:06 – Incomplete pass. Linfield forces a huge three and out.
2:52 – The ‘Cats get great field position but Franklin fumbles the snap on the first play and the Pirates take over with 2:50 to go on their own 45.
1:54: A personal foul moves the ball back to Whitworth’s 33 and they will punt. Sequira back to recieve. He takes it out and fumbles. Whitworth recovers the fumble at Whitworth takes over at the Linfield 39 iwth 1:33
1:20: Kemp on a keeper to the Linfield 21.
3 Sec: Touchdown Wildcats. Taylor Skore takes back an 82-yard interception return to the house for six. If there ever were a momentum swing this was it. 14-7 Linfield leads as we head into the second quarter.
We have seen it all this half. A couple of Linfield turnovers have been huge but the Skore touchdown is the difference right now. Trick plays, turnovers and pick-sixs… what more could we ask for? So much for a defensive struggle. Let’s just have a good old fashion shootout! 14-7 at the end of one and there are no signs of this one slowing down.
2nd Quarter
13:42: Linfield jumps offsides giving Whitworth a first down on a third-and-three. Anderson is stopped on the next play. Anderson has been bottled up for five rushes for six yards. He is getting most of his touches on first-down. You gotta think that the Pirates are going to play-action on first down or else Linfield will continue putting eight guys in the box.
10:29: Masters fumbles Whitworth takes over on the Linfield 17. It has simply been a matter of hanging onto the ball for Linfield.
8:28: 3rd and goal from the seven… Anderson shifts out left and Peck throws it up to him just a yard deep in the end zone and the Pirate playmaker comes down with the catch.
14-14 its all tied up.
6:29- Whitworth takes over on their own nine
5:44 – Bryce Comfort recovers a fumble and the ‘Cats take over at the Whitworth 27.
4:53 – McClain Stone takes a pick back 82 yards for a touchdown. The Pirates return the favor. 21-14 Whitworth.
2:00 – After punting, Linfield holds Whitworth to a three-and-out and takes over at the Whitworth 30.
1:38 – Touchdown ‘Cats! So much for not scrambling… Cole Frankline scampers in from 18 yards out to tie the game at 21.
3rd QUARTER
12:41: Linfield forces a three-and-out. Will take over at their own 14 yard line.
8:40 : With a couple of third down conversions, Linfield is putting together a nice drive into Whitworth territory.
7:10 : Franklin scrambles for a first down on third and ten
6:50 : Ford makes it first and goal from the seven.
6:23 (3:23 p.m.) : The very next play Ford scores giving Linfield a 28-21 lead.
3:30 : Peck takes a keeper on third down all way to the Linfield 20. Now down to the five on the next play.
25 sec: Linfield holds on a first and goal from the five forcing a field goal attempt.
19 sec: Fake field goal touchdown! Chad Flett on the reception. 28-28…. unreal.
4th QUARTER
14:51 : With the ball on their own 26, Franklin hits Masters on a streak to the Whitworth 27.
12:17: Birkhofer hits from 36 yards out. 31-28 ‘Cats.
11:23: a huge third and 11 on the Whitworth 27. The crowd is really getting into this one and they are rewarded. Linfield stops Whitworth, forcing a punt. Obviously the ‘Cats have to be aware of a fake here. If they get the ball back and can drive down and scores the momentum willreally shift. A great Linfield roll brings the ball back to the Whitworth 38.
9:26: Linfield is called for a holding call bringing back a huge Cole Franklin run.
7:30 : 3rd down and three on the Whitworth 27…. big play….Peck is sacked by Taylor Summers.
6:30 : ‘Cats need a drive to burn some clock. The first run is stuffed for a two-yard loss.
5:00: Buddy Saxson makes the catch down the fhe Whitworth 38… a new set of downs.
3:00 – Clock is under three now and the Pirates are hanging on to their last two timeouts. Birkhofer is nearly automatic so the Wildcats can run this thing down and force Whitworth to score a TD.
1:46: Ford ahead for the first down to the 16 yard line. Timeout Linfield. The clock is down to 1:20. The ‘Cats will be able to run this one out it looks like.
Linfield 31 Whitworth 28
That’s a big win folks. The Wildcats seemed to overcome everything today and put up an absolutly great effort. Linfield will travel up to Portland to face off with Lewis @ Clark.
