Fasten Your Seatbelts

There’s not a parking place to be had, the recycling bins are overflowing with cardboard boxes and change is in the air on the Linfield campus.

Students are arriving in droves. Moms and dads in all manner of SUVs are busy dropping off Johnny and Janie for the first days of college. Things will get even more hectic when the upperclassmen return to campus over the holiday weekend.

For the athletic department staff, it means the 10 days of fall training camp are pretty much over and we’re ready for our first events of the season. Volleyball opens today in Newberg and the cross country team runs tonight in Monmouth.

Athletic director Scott Carnahan, in his usual hands-on fashion, was busy replacing some placards that read “Shots” and “Saves” at the Linfield soccer field. The American flag was in need of replacement and Scott followed up on that responsibility also.

For me, I made sure the soccer press box was clean and the PA/scoreboard interfaces were functioning properly. You sure don’t want to have to fiddle around with any of those things minutes before the start of the first game.

Everything’s good to go. Let’s hope the teams are also!
